Excellence in Nursing 2010

Out of 28 nominations, Regina Birdwell LPN, was selected the recipient of the ‘Excellence in Nursing’ award at the May 6th Nurses’ Day reception at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. A plaque and $500 were presented to her by Laura Kurzendoerfer, Vice President of Nursing who stated “Regina exemplifies the profession of nursing and has spent half her life delivering compassionate care for her patients. She is an outstanding role model exemplifying leadership, compassion, and dedication.”

Since September 1988, Regina has worked full-time at GPRMC; 2 years in ICU and 20 years in Outpatient Recovery in the Perioperative Department. She became a Licensed Practical Nurse in November 1988 and recently acquired the position of Pre-Admission Specialist. She has done an excellent job planning and implementing this new role. She makes sure all the pre-op paperwork is in order so the patients’ surgery process goes more smoothly. She is responsible for pre-op teaching and education for all the patients having surgery, pain management or interventional radiology procedures.

The nursing staff submits the nomination ballots and the winner is chosen by a Committee consisting of the Vice President of Nursing, the Nursing Directors, and the House Supervisors.
