Economic Climate

Agriculture, ranching and oil and gas production are the hallmarks of Western Oklahoma’s economy, a tradition that began before statehood and continues to thrive, thus contributing significantly to the global economy.

Unemployment is low in this part of the state, aided by an active manufacturing, energy, governmental and health care business climate.

Malpractice Insurance

Oklahoma has one of the lowest malpractice rates in the U.S. Although the rates have risen over the past year and will see another increase in the year to come, they are still among the lowest in the nation.

Education

Elk City has seven primary and secondary schools with approximately 2100 students and 148 teachers. Under construction is a new $17 million athletic and arts complex at Elk City High School. With the support of administrators, teachers and counselors alike, students are encouraged to achieve and compete for countless scholarships to colleges and universities both within and outside the state. The school system has an active Foundation, which raises thousands of dollars each year to bolster state educational monies and fund special projects.

Elk City students are extremely active in sports, instrumental and vocal music, and other curricular and extra-curricular activities, and are greatly supported by the community.

Three institutions of higher learning are within a 60 mile radius, and the Carnegie Library has approximately 43,000 volumes for public use.

The Arts

Culture-minded pioneers began the emphasis on bringing the arts to the Great Plains at the turn of the century, and that emphasis is still strong. Symphony orchestras, classical musicians and other artists regularly have a venue in Elk City, made possible by an active Arts Council and generous benefactors. Elk City also boasts one of the only community theatres in the state under professional direction, with plays, musicals and other entertainment scheduled throughout the year.

Recreation

Western Oklahoma is well known for its abundance and variety of hunting and fishing opportunities. Guest and "dude" ranches populate the area, with the opportunity for horseback riding, camping and other outdoor activities. Elk Lake, within the city limits, as well as larger lakes throughout the region, offer hours of enjoyment by local and visiting boating enthusiasts.
